Welcome to Maker Heights!

This is the home of the Rame Conservation Trust and a host of businesses, artists and artisans. We'll introduce you to the Trust and some of our friends.

The Maker Heights site is located close to the end of the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall.  The Rame Peninsula itself is characterised by unspoilt scenery, mixed with maritime and naval heritage, and opportunities for formal and informal recreation, intertwined with quaint coastal villages and a spectacular coastline.  The importance of the environment to this area is reflected in the area’s status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Maker Barracks

The nearby settlements are highly characterful; Kingsand and Cawsand are particularly valuable as examples of Cornish villages subject to the simultaneous influences of the maritime industries and a substantial military presence over several generations.  The Maker site is also adjacent to a designated Country Park (Mount Edgcumbe), an SSSI and an extensive area of Heritage Coast.

Despite its geographical proximity to Plymouth and the fact that Cornwall is a tourism destination, the Rame Peninsula is relatively isolated in terms of accessibility, and is often referred to as the ‘forgotten corner of Cornwall’.

Rame Dance Festival 2010

Maker Events plan to host a small scale event over the 2nd, 3rd, 4th July 2010 called 'Rame Dance'. This will be a much smaller event than the Sunshine Festival and there will only be 1000 tickets  for sale. There'll be a main marquee with live bands, cabaret stage, real ale bars, DJ and dance tent, food and stalls, with camping on the beautiful Maker site. Tickets on sale now on a first come first served basis - but please note that there will be no day tickets, only weekend tickets this year. When they are gone they are gone!

Open Letter from the Chairman

Dear All,

The work of the Rame Conservation Trust has been to preserve this outstanding site with all of its edifices but more importantly, the people and activities within and around them. Despite the best endeavours to maintain what is a very precious suite of assets, the resources required to really make a difference are way beyond the means of the Trust as it currently stands.

With that in mind, several of us have been sharing a vision of the future for Maker Heights with a number of key stakeholders, including the Architectural Heritage Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, Regional Development Agency, Cornwall Convergence, Cornwall Council and others.

That vision includes bringing the barrack buildings back to their formal glory whilst continuing to develop the wider community aspects, including its art, music, and performance artists; other micro-industries and its growing importance as a social epicentre for the Rame Peninsula, whether as part of the heritage story or contemporary events such as weddings, music festivals or even pantomimes!

To achieve this vision, we are now approaching an important decision point and it is vitally important that we engage with others as we consider the choices that will be presented to us. We know that there will have to be compromises if we are to be able to sustain the progress we have made over the last years. We also know that if we really hope to achieve the vision, we have to maintain momentum.

This week we hope to host a further visit, this time from Councillor Carolyn Rule, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration for Cornwall Council, together with Dr Sandra Rothwell, Head of Economic Development, to let them see first hand the progress we have made and the opportunity that Maker Heights represents for the Rame Peninsula and the whole of South East Cornwall.

To that end, we are calling for your active support to make our vision a reality. I would personally like to encourage you to speak to our Trustees about our plans. Our regular Trustee meetings are held at the Tamar Outdoor Centre on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. Otherwise, you will often find us at “Friday Club” in the Random Arms at Maker Maker Heights on a Friday evening.

Please circulate this to as many “Friends of Maker Heights” as possible.

WHO OWNS MAKER?

Maker Heights is owned by the Rame Conservation Trust, a registered Charity. The Trust is managed by volunteer Trustees, appointed by the members. Anyone can join, and membership costs just £10 a year. To find out more, please click on the MEMBERSHIP section in the left hand menu.
