Welcome to Maker Heights!

This is the home of the Rame Conservation Trust and a host of businesses, artists and artisans. We'll introduce you to the Trust and some of our friends.

The Maker Heights site is located close to the end of the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall.  The Rame Peninsula itself is characterised by unspoilt scenery, mixed with maritime and naval heritage, and opportunities for formal and informal recreation, intertwined with quaint coastal villages and a spectacular coastline.  The importance of the environment to this area is reflected in the area’s status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Maker Barracks

The nearby settlements are highly characterful; Kingsand and Cawsand are particularly valuable as examples of Cornish villages subject to the simultaneous influences of the maritime industries and a substantial military presence over several generations.  The Maker site is also adjacent to a designated Country Park (Mount Edgcumbe), an SSSI and an extensive area of Heritage Coast.

Despite its geographical proximity to Plymouth and the fact that Cornwall is a tourism destination, the Rame Peninsula is relatively isolated in terms of accessibility, and is often referred to as the ‘forgotten corner of Cornwall’.

Snow White at Maker

Over the winter of 2009/10, through some of the coldest weather in living memory, dozens of brave souls congregated at Maker Heights on weekends and weekday evenings to rehearse what would become the first Maker Music and Arts pantomime. The fruit of their efforts, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, written by David Barrett, was performed on the 16th, 17th and 18th of February to packed houses and rave reviews, incidentally raising funds for the Rame Conservation Trust.

Maker Music and Arts – better known for live music performances, its youth music group funded by CYMAK, and the open mic and film club nights on alternate Tuesdays – has wanted to move into theatrical performance for some time, and the success of its first production ensures there will be more to come. Directed by Jo Ayre – who also excelled as the Wicked Queen and had the children booing enthusiastically – the all-singing, all-dancing show was produced, cast, costumed, musically accompanied, set decorated and propped entirely by the efforts of local people, most of them members of the Trust. Their efforts have ensured that Snow White will live long in the memories of the peninsula.

A DVD of the show will be available from the end of March, and the next production will start to prepare in the early autumn. Maker's Woodlands

Management of the woodlands is a time consuming task and over the years dedicated members of the woodland group have put in thousands of hours of work, removing non-indigenous plants, clearing paths and replanting trees to create an amenity that is a benefit to the local community and visitors to the area.

Unfortunately, on several occasions in the past, a combination of high winds and aging trees has resulted in falling trees causing damage to power lines and neighbours’ property, especially on the boundary with Anderton and the road to Cremyll. This has, understandably, not made us very popular with the power company or our neighbours!

Over the weeks of March 2010 you may notice considerable activity in this area of the woodland. Western Power has kindly agreed to part fund and carry out the removal of several trees that pose a continuing threat.. We hope that this will address any problems that could arise in the future. The trees to be removed are mostly aged chestnuts and other trees that are affected by disease.

It is planned that, wherever possible, future growth from the stumps of felled trees will be managed by coppicing and new planting will take place where appropriate to eventually bring this part of the woodland to a state of full glory, but not cause problems with power lines in the future!

The felled trees will not be wasted with as much of the timber as possible being put to productive use. Meanwhile work will continue in the rest of the woodland clearing more paths and continuing to maintain the site as an asset for the local community

WHO OWNS MAKER?

Maker Heights is owned by the Rame Conservation Trust, a registered Charity. The Trust is managed by volunteer Trustees, appointed by the members. Anyone can join, and membership costs just £10 a year. To find out more, please click on the MEMBERSHIP section in the left hand menu.
