Snow White at Maker

Over the winter of 2009/10, through some of the coldest weather in living memory, dozens of brave souls congregated at Maker Heights on weekends and weekday evenings to rehearse what would become the first Maker Music and Arts pantomime. The fruit of their efforts, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, written by David Barrett, was performed on the 16th, 17th and 18th of February to packed houses and rave reviews, incidentally raising funds for the Rame Conservation Trust.

Maker Music and Arts – better known for live music performances, its youth music group funded by CYMAK, and the open mic and film club nights on alternate Tuesdays – has wanted to move into theatrical performance for some time, and the success of its first production ensures there will be more to come. Directed by Jo Ayre – who also excelled as the Wicked Queen and had the children booing enthusiastically – the all-singing, all-dancing show was produced, cast, costumed, musically accompanied, set decorated and propped entirely by the efforts of local people, most of them members of the Trust. Their efforts have ensured that Snow White will live long in the memories of the peninsula.

A DVD of the show will be available from the end of March, and the next production will start to prepare in the early autumn.
