Maker's Woodlands
Management of the woodlands is a time consuming task and over the years dedicated members of the woodland group have put in thousands of hours of work, removing non-indigenous plants, clearing paths and replanting trees to create an amenity that is a benefit to the local community and visitors to the area.
Unfortunately, on several occasions in the past, a combination of high winds and aging trees has resulted in falling trees causing damage to power lines and neighbours’ property, especially on the boundary with Anderton and the road to Cremyll. This has, understandably, not made us very popular with the power company or our neighbours!
Over the weeks of March 2010 you may notice considerable activity in this area of the woodland. Western Power has kindly agreed to part fund and carry out the removal of several trees that pose a continuing threat.. We hope that this will address any problems that could arise in the future. The trees to be removed are mostly aged chestnuts and other trees that are affected by disease.
It is planned that, wherever possible, future growth from the stumps of felled trees will be managed by coppicing and new planting will take place where appropriate to eventually bring this part of the woodland to a state of full glory, but not cause problems with power lines in the future!
The felled trees will not be wasted with as much of the timber as possible being put to productive use. Meanwhile work will continue in the rest of the woodland clearing more paths and continuing to maintain the site as an asset for the local community
