On Thursday 3 September, the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, Maker Heights was visited as part of a tour of the coastal defences of South East Cornwall.
Organised by Cornwall Council in partnership with the Rame Conservation Trust, the free, guided ramble started from Maker Church near Cremyll. Walk leaders John Duncan and Harry Taylor from the Rame Conservation Trust guided ramblers along the 3.5 mile coast path to Kingsand, taking in the old shore batteries that defended Plymouth along the way.
After a break for refreshments at one of Kingsand’s inns, the party headed back along Maker Heights. There was a stop at the old Maker Camp barracks for lunch with the chance to enjoy a meal based on wartime rations. There was also a special Entertainment National Service Association (ENSA) style commemorative surprise at the barracks.
