What Maker Heights means to me...

Since the Trust purchased Maker Heights in 1997, many thousands of people have visited for the campsite, the festivals, the music nights and weddings. But many hundreds of thousands of people have memories of Maker Heights. From 1926 to 1985, Maker Camp provided holidays and fresh country air for children from all over the UK. While most now live far away, many return to this beautiful place.

A little while ago, some trustees were meeting with some parish councillors in Maker's Random Arms. During the discussion, an elderly stranger appeared at the door.  He introduced himself and explained that as a boy in 1949 he had been staying in the Barracks. During the holiday he met a girl who was staying in the Nissen Huts, now the Tamar Outdoor Centre. Over time they grew more fond of each other and, one day, shared a first kiss over the gate by the Guard House. That kiss led to a happy marriage that had endured a lifetime. His wife having sadly passed away six months previously, he had come to Maker to relive fond memories.

For that old man Maker Heights was the place where he had found fulfillment. Maker Heights means many things to many people. Why not tell us what Maker Heights means to you?
